Is stone rated? Which is stronger, granite or marble?

No. Stone is not rated, like ceramic tile. However, stone does vary greatly in durability. There is no law that states you cannot use these products in a variety of applications. However, each type of stone has it’s own suggested durability usage. All natural stones should be sealed to prevent porosity and staining.

Granite - The strongest of all natural stones. Available in polished and some honed finishes. Can be used for a variety of interior and exterior applications. Most granites will not scratch, stain or weather. Ideal for kitchen counters.

Marble - Much less durable than granite. Should be used for interior applications only with low usage such as a master bath, fireplace or foyer which is not the main entry way. Requires attention to maintain high gloss surface scratch free. Available in polished, tumbled and some honed finishes. Polished finish will not hold up well in kitchen applications. Tumbled finish can be used in a variety of applications due to already distressed surface.

Limestone - The softest of natural stones. Available in polished, honed and tumbled finishes. Stains and scratches easily in polished and honed finish. Tumbled finish can be used in a variety of applications due to already distressed surface. Slate - A durable rustic stone. Available in honed, cleft and tumbled finishes. Can be used for interior or exterior applications. Great for exterior steps and fireplaces.

Does granite absorb stains or scratch?

Although most granites are extremely durable, a few exist which can be more porous than others. Regular maintenance and sealing is recommended for all granites to be certain no staining occurs. Granites do not generally surface scratch by normal household usage.

Do I pick out my own slabs for my project?

Yes. Absolutely! You will personally select your slabs at our or a nearby supplier’s warehouse. The slabs will be tagged for you and you will be asked to sign off on the color your choose prior to starting your project. This will ensure you get the exact color and variation you desire.

Will my kitchen counters have a seam?

Due to size of slabs, most kitchen counter installations may require one or more seams. Before cutting your stone, you will review your layout and seam placement with our experienced fabricators. At installation, the seams are filled in to color match the stone.

How Do I care for my granite counters?

Italia Marble & Granite will instruct you in detail at purchase on maintaining your new stone countertops. A specialized cleaner and sealer are required. Sealing is a very simple process which should be reapplied every 6 - 12 months, pending stone usage.
